Analysis of the Gazal- Chandi jaisa rang hai tera

Chandi jaisa rang hai tera - Lyrics

Chandi jaisa rang hai tera, sone jaise baal
Ek tuhi dhanvaan hai gori, baaki sub kangaal
Chandi jaisa rang hai tera, sone jaise baal
Ek tuhi dhanvaan hai gori, baaki sub kangaal
Ek tuhi dhanvaan hai gori, baaki sub kangaal........

Jis reste se tu gujre, voh phoolon se bhar jaye
Jis reste se tu gujre, voh phoolon se bhar jaye
Tere pair ki komal aahat sote bhaag jagaye
Jo patthar choo le gori tu voh heera ban jaye
Tu jisko mil jaye voh,
tu jisko mil jayeVo ho jaye malamal
Ek tuhi dhanvaan hai gori, baaki sub kangaal
Chandi jaisa rang hai tera sone jaise baal
Ek tuhi dhanvaan hai gori, baaki sub kangaal.......

Jo be-rang ho us par kya kya rang jamate log
Jo be-rang ho us par kya kya rang jamate log
Tu naadaan na jane kaise roop churate log
Nazaren bhar bhar dekhen tujhko aate jaate log
Chail chabeeli rani thoda,
Chail chabeeli rani thoda ghoonghat aur nikaal
Ek tuhi dhanvaan hai gori, baaki sub kangaal
Chandi jaisa rang hai tera, sone jaise baal
Ek tuhi dhanvaan hai gori, baaki sub kangaal.........

Dhanak ghata kaliyan aur tare sub hain tere roop
Dhanak ghata kaliyan aur tare sub hain tera roop
Ghazalen hon ya geet hon mere sub mein tera roop
Yunhi chamakti rahe hamesha tere husn ki dhoop
Tujhe nazar na lage kisi ki
Tujhe nazar na lage kisi kiJiye hazaron saal
Ek tuhi dhanvaan hai gori, baaki sub kangaal
Chandi jaisa rang hai tera sone jaise baal
Ek tuhi dhanvaan hai gori, baaki sub kangaal........

Chandi jaisa rang hai tera, sone jaise baal
Ek tuhi dhanvaan hai gori, baaki sub kangaal
Ek tuhi dhanvaan hai gori, baaki sub kangaal
Ek tuhi dhanvaan hai gori, baaki sub kangaal
Chandi jaisa ....

At the first sight ,the Gazal gives much aesthetic delight to us . But as we study I.A.Richard’s new criticism, I try to find some fault and also apply the different theories in this gazal.

Chandi jaisa rang hai tera, sone jaise baal
Ek tuhi dhanvaan hai gori, baaki sub kangaal
Chandi jaisa rang hai tera, sone jaise baal
Ek tuhi dhanvaan hai gori, baaki sub kangaal

At the first line, poet uses paradox to describe his beloved’s beauty. He uses particular things like, ornaments to compare her beauty. It gives only pleasure to read but how is it possible to have glory of silver and golden hair? Having silver glory and golden hair, she becomes rich among people so, there we find again paradoxical words  like .. “ Dhanvan” & “ Kangaal” means richness and poverty go together. I think , here we can apply the theory of Franz Fanon’s  ‘Black Skin White Mask’. Because having  beauty beloved is rich and others who have no external beauty they are “ Kangaal”. That seems that whiteness is itself virtue and it has a power of superiority.

Jis reste se tu gujre, voh phoolon se bhar jaye
Jis reste se tu gujre, voh phoolon se bhar jaye
Tere pair ki komal aahat sote bhaag jagaye

Reader can get the idea about beloved’s delicacy which is compare with softness of the flower think it also suggest the ‘ Master-Slave’ relationship as  I take the reference of Black skin White mask.

Jo patthar choo le gori tu voh heera ban jaye
Tu jisko mil jaye voh,
tu jisko mil jayeVo ho jaye malamal
Ek tuhi dhanvaan hai gori, baaki sub kangaal
Chandi jaisa rang hai tera sone jaise baal
Ek tuhi dhanvaan hai gori, baaki sub kangaal.......

Poet attempts to portray the idea about his beloved How tender she is! The things which is touched by her those all things turn into Diamond. But, I think we all know the result as we have already the same story of King Midas who touched anything which is turned into Gold. If it is possible for her with touching stone it turns into Diamond, no poverty we find. Next line describe the attraction of physical beauty because poet uses the word   “Malamal”  which we generally use for the things.

Jo be-rang ho us par kya kya rang jamate log
Jo be-rang ho us par kya kya rang jamate log
Tu naadaan na jane kaise roop churate log
Nazaren bhar bhar dekhen tujhko aate jaate log

Here, again noticeable thing is the treatment of the paradoxical language or words. Like Colorful and Colorless. According to me, it seems like white people rule over or dominate over the Black. People treats as thing rather than human being.

Chail chabeeli rani thoda,
Chail chabeeli rani thoda ghoonghat aur nikaal
Ek tuhi dhanvaan hai gori, baaki sub kangaal
Chandi jaisa rang hai tera, sone jaise baal
Ek tuhi dhanvaan hai gori, baaki sub kangaal.........

For, this line we can say that there is the string influence of the rigid rituals of the society . Men dominated country and also suggest the inferiority and inequality for the women . he uses the word “ghoonghat” not for love & care for her but to control her freedom.

Dhanak ghata kaliyan aur tare sub hain tere roop
Dhanak ghata kaliyan aur tare sub hain tera roop
Ghazalen hon ya geet hon mere sub mein tera roop

First, poet talks about control over the women & suddenly he goes towards the praising not for true love but just shake of praising because he put her beauty in each and every object of the nature. Poet says that in any form of writing like Geet or Gazal , he has to write about his beloved because he has no ideas and center without her beauty.

Yunhi chamakti rahe hamesha tere husn ki dhoop
Tujhe nazar na lage kisi ki
Tujhe nazar na lage kisi kiJiye hazaron saal
Ek tuhi dhanvaan hai gori, baaki sub kangaal
Chandi jaisa rang hai tera sone jaise baal
Ek tuhi dhanvaan hai gori, baaki sub kangaal........

Beloved is human being, so it is not possible her shining forever. with the line  “Tujhe nazar na lage kisi kiJiye hazaron saal”. Beloved compare with the thing because he says that” nazar na lage kisi ki”  & then says “kiJiye hazaron saal” How is it possible to live thousands years on the earth for ordinary human beings. So, I can say that , the poem is just about on praise of beloved using different objects . And doing this it seems that poet wants to live long through admiring his beloved’s beauty.

Thank you.

માધવ ક્યાંય નથી !

માધવ ક્યાંય નથી .......                                  -    હરિન્દ્ર દવે          ‘Madhav  Kyay nathi’  is written by very renowned writer Harindra Dave. The title of the novel – itself suggest something. I think there are two aspect of the title. First , he is not at any particular place means that he is omniscient . And second meaning is that he is no where!               The plot of the novel also deals with this idea and gradually reveals the whole events of Krishna’s life. The story  of the novel reveals not only Krishna’s journey from his birth but also with him we find the journey of Naradmuni who wants to meet Krishna but unfortunately he can’t.                 The novel based on only Naradmuni’s desire or extreme eagerness to meet Krishn...
