General Concept Of Structralism

“Language speaks us rather we  speak language”

     Structuralism is a method of interpretation and analysis of every aspect of human behavior and culture. In literature, we have also the method of Structuralism to interpret the text with various perspectives. Structuralists say that there is no meaning of particular word because  meaning comes only through the context.

     There are many structuralist critics like… Ferdinand Saussure , Gerald Garnette,  Claude –Levi –Strauss ,Roland Barthea etc…

    We find basic common structure in every work. And literary work has also common structure like… Beginning , Climax and End.. To understand structuralism , we must understand the three word ..... Sign, Signifier, and Signified.

Sign – Sound, word

signifier– through sign meaning comes & image pop up in mind

Signified – Something already there. Signifier stands for.

  So, we find three fundamental assumptions  are:

1. Arbitrary
2. Relational
3. Convectional

Getting the overview of Structuralism, now let’s see what structuralist critic do…. 

 To read text with the help of Structuralism , we have to understand Narratology  first because it includes many sub parts like…

1. order

2. Frequency

3. Duration

4. Voice

5. mood

In films , any literary texts, we find the basic structure. Most of the Hindi movies have same structure of love stories but there is difference in representing.

Example:

 Karan Johar’s movies have same structure. 

Mostly all T.V serials have same discourse.

In literary texts have same structure like ..we have text one drama Dr. Faustus and another is Frankenstein . Though both are different books , written by different author , in different ages , there is the same idea of Quest of knowledge ,Being Superior, want to be God , and that quest lead both protagonist to the death.

Many times , the conflict between Good and bad,  right v/s wrong or rarely two opposite right. we  describes the structure of Hindi or southern  movies like.. boy and girl love each other but  families are enemy of each other. Sometime, family wants marriage of their children but children are not ready.

T.V serials like… Crime Patrol, CID , all have same structure in their every episode but they just do changes in representing the events.  

Many times, we find the same structure of text and film..like Ramayana and film ‘Hum Sath Sath Hai’ .The concept of join family. so, we may conclude that  texts and films go together and everything has same structure. This is my point of view about the structuralism.
