Secret Superstar : It's all about Women
It is the story of Insia Malik who belongs to the conservative Muslim family. From the very first entry of Najma, audience can assume that there is something is going wrong to her and afterwards audience come across that she is the victim of love marriage life and domestic violence. Belonging to much rigid Muslim background, Najma can't raise her voice openly against the violence and goes on under the control of dominant rules and suffers a lot. Insia has the dream to become the world's best Singer .It is also Young adult story of Insia and Chintan who helps her throughout the movie.
It seems like that there is nothing new in the movie because it shows the same story of women's pain and suffering to fulfil their dream. There we find the most beautiful bonding of the relationship of Mother and daughter. Though Insia raised under the dominant cultural she raises her voice to be free from the cage of patriarchy. The frustration and behaviour of Malik represents very brutally towards daughter and wife in the movie. She knows everything that how her father treats her mother and that treatment leads her suffering from the within. She wants to make free her mother from the cage of domestic violence where Malik rules over them. She constantly plans something to run away from the house. Insia constantly reminds her mother that she has to leave her husband and lives her own peaceful life. Najma lives constantly under the fear of her husband's mindset and becomes submissive. Though Najma is fighter she remains oppressed. The birth of Insia is itself the example of Najma's protest against her rigid family. Women have their own dream to make it successful, have their own bright future. They have right to see their dream and live for them. Najma can't leave her husband because of financial dependency. If she leaves where will she go ? Najma is helpless but confident to fight. She is caring but afraid of her husband's behaviour. The depth of relationship of Mother and daughter is true to life. It is not only about bright future but also about the her life.
Presence of Aamir khan as Shakti Kumar in the movie leads to read it with feminist gals. At The beginning, Shakti Kumar (Aamir khan) is portrayed as rude, egoistic, two time divorce musician in the movie. Aamir khan is there to support and help to Insia. There is no one who promotes Insia for her dream except her mother in the family but dominant power structure and patriarchy beats them and represent them as they are weak, submissive, and inferior.
Gradually audience comes to know that Shakti Kumar is good person. He also suffers from loneliness in the industry. He controls the flow of movie in narration. The secret reveals in the Award ceremony who is the real Secret Superstar ? It is quite interesting to see how the presence of Shakti Kumar has overpowered in the narrative technique. It seems that without the help of Shakti Kumar, it could not possible for her to fulfil her dream.
Feminism it's not only about the women's rights, male domination, clothes she wears or the time she's getting back home. Feminism is much more than that. It is about everything among happening with women. Sometimes, the narrative which runs slowly which creates menace and disturb the mind just like melodrama. Najma's sudden change demands the courage and it seems forceful action but it quite respective decision which is taken.
The secret of the film is that the real secret Superstar is the mother - Najma which is revealed at the end of the movie. Movie adores the Motherhood.
