Khandahar

Khandahar is a film directed by Mrinal Sen, based on a Bengali short story, Telenapota Abishkar (Discovering Telenapota) by Premendra Mitra.

The movie won India’s National film award for Best Direction, Best Actress and Best Editing. It was screened in many international film festivals and has won accolades all over the world.

 From the beginning movie Khandahar  gives the real image of destruction. The destruction is personified with the character of Jamini. Sabana Azmi plays excellent role as Jamini. Her waiting, restlessness, loneliness, inside destruction, darkness shown beautifully with the ruin places.

 Settings gives the grad view to the film. In the story, Unnamed narrator tells the story to us from where to where we are moving. In the movie we have three named characters, Dipu, Subhash (Photographer) and Anil.

Dipu has planned to go out from the busy schedule of life. He invites his two friends Subhash and Anil to join him to see the old ruin places where his ancestors lived years ago.

Dipu told  Subhash that 'It is just the Paradise for photographer'.

Friends spens three days there under the company of care taker and his daughter.  Dipu informed that It was the place where nobody wants to live. The olny the sick mother and her daughter - Jamini (Shabana Azmi) stay there because they have no options to go elsewhere.

"આ તો સ્મશાન જેવો દેશ છે. દસ ઘરમાં શોધ ખોળ કરો તો પણ એક પુરુષ મળશે નહિ. મારા જેવી મૃત:પાય વ્યક્તિઓ, તૂટેલી ઈંટોનો આધાર લઇ ચારે તરફ મુશ્કેલીથી શ્વાસ લે છે, આવા વાતાવરણમાં કોઈના આધાર વિના એ છોકરી પુરુષની ગરજ પણ સારે છે. ઘણી ઈચ્છા હોવા છતાં પણ, નજર ઊંચી કરી એકવાર પણ જોવાની તમે હિંમત નહિ કરો. તમારાં પોતાનાં આંસુ પણ તમે છુપાવી શકશો નહિ." Actual story is about discovering. It's about Waiting  or Ceaseless Waiting. Mother needs totally bedrest even she can't move herself. She is blind,too. Mother is Waiting for Niranjan with whom jamini's engagement has alreday been decided from childhood. 

છોકરીની ઉંમર તમે કળી શકશો નહિ. તેના મુખનું શાંત કરુણ ગંભીર્ય જોઈને તમને થશે કે જીવનનો લાંબો, નિર્દય પથ તેણે પાર કર્યો છે. તેની પાતળી, ઊંચી, અપુષ્ટ દેહાકૃતિ જોઈ તમને થશે કે તે કિશોરી મટી યુવતી બનતાં બનતાં જાણે એક ક્ષણે સ્થગિત થઇ ગઈ છે. ( તેલેનાપોતાની શોધ-)

Subhash plays important role as photographer and his thought process is described the deep emotions with each pictures. His each photograph has the message with the depth. The mother believes that one day Nirajan will be back and get married to her daughter. When  Dipu and his friends visit the place, the mother has great faith that with Dipu Niranjan has come and no one wants to break her fake faith.

'ચારેક વર્ષ પહેલાં પણ એ છોકરાએ અહીં આવીને કહ્યું હતું, કે પરદેશની નોકરી પુરી થતાં, પાછો આવી, એમની દીકરી સાથે લગ્ન કરશે. બસ તે સમયથી જ આ ડોસી આ અજગરપુરીમાં રહી એ જ આશામાં દિવસો ગણે છે.'

'અરે પણ તે પરદેશ ગયો જ ક્યાં હતો, કે પાછા આવવાનો સવાલ ઊભો થાય! એ તો ડોસીના દુરાગ્રહને કારણે તેની આગળ આ ગપ્પું મારી ગયેલો. આવી સાવ ભિખારી જેવી સ્ત્રીની દીકરીને પરણવા નિરંજન ઓછો જ બંધાયેલો છે? તે તો ક્યારનોય પરણીને સંસાર માંડી બેઠો છે. પણ આ વાત ડોસીને કહે કોણ? કહે તો પણ એ માનશે નહિ, અને જો વાત ઉપર વિશ્વાસ રાખે, તો તો તરત જ તેના પ્રાણ ઊડી જશે. આ દુષ્કૃત્યમાં વિનાકારણ કોઈ ભાગીદાર બનવા શું કામ રાજી થાય?'

'જામિનીને નિરંજન વિશે ખબર છે?'
'એ તો જાણે જ છે. પણ મા આગળ કેવી રીતે આ વાત કરે? ( તેલેનાપોતાની શોધ-)

When Subhash visit Jamini's mother, her mother thinks that Niranjan comes and she talks as if he were Niranjan.  Eveybody is speechless due to mother's questions. She constanlty asking him,  where he was till today? Will he marry to Jamini?  Nobody has any answer regarding questions. At that time to console the mother Subhash replied positively to her.

Dipu is more practical man and he discuss about what did he tell to the Jamini's mother? Subhash has no answer at all and says that that time it was the only answer to give. Now again history repeats itself........

Before four years Niranjan said that "I  will come" and agian after four years another says the same. ''I will come'' Words gives the relief but pain and suffering remains as it. Waiting never ends to Jamini.

"ગાડું સાંકડું છે તે વાત પણ તમને પરેશાન કરશે નહિ, તેનાં પૈડાંનું કેવળ બે જ શબ્દોના પડઘા વારંવાર તમારે કાને પડશે - 'પાછો આવીશ, પાછો આવીશ.'
અસ્ત પામેલા તારાની જેમ તેલેનાપોતાની સ્મૃતિ તમને એક અસ્પષ્ટ સ્વપ્ન સમાન લાગશે."

Everyone wants to visit such places and spends their holidays there and enjoyed a lot. Have you ever think about such places which were the most alive once upon a time. It may happen that it gives vary memories and monuments but it can't stay forever. We may go there to visit will busy in our daily schedule forgetting all even emotions.

'મોટાં શહેરનાં ભીડવાળા, દિવાઓથી ઉજ્જવલ એવા પહોળા રસ્તા ઉપર આવી પહોંચશો, ત્યારે પણ તમારા મનમાં તેલેનાપોતાની સ્મૃતિ સુદૂર અને છતાં પણ જાણે તમારી સાથે ઘનિષ્ટતા ધરાવતા એક તારાની જેમ ઉજ્જવલ બની રહેશે. તમને ખ્યાલ નહિ આવે કે તમારા મનના આકાશમાં થોડું થોડું ધુમ્મ્સ જામતું જાય છે. '

'અજાણતાં જ શરીર અને મનમાંથી ઘણુંબધું ધોવાઈ-ભૂંસાઈ ગયું હશે. અસ્ત પામેલા તારાની જેમ તેલેનાપોતાની સ્મૃતિ તમને એક અસ્પષ્ટ સ્વપ્ન સમાન લાગશે. તમને લાગશે કે તેલેનાપોતા નામની સાચી કોઈ જગ્યા હતી જ નહિ. જેનું મોં ગંભીર અને કઠોર હતું, અને જેની દ્રષ્ટિ સુદૂર અને કરુણ હતી, એક ખંડિયેરની છાયા સમાન તે છોકરી કદાચ કેવળ તમારી દુર્બળ ક્ષણની અવાસ્તવિક કોઈ કલ્પના જ હતી.
એકવાર એક ક્ષણ માટે જેની શોધ તમે કરી શક્યા હતા તે તેલેનાપોતા ફરી એકવાર ચિરંતન રાત્રીની અતળમાં ડૂબી જશે.'
