Death , be not proud
John Donne
The sonnet - 'Death , be not proud' is written
by John Donne - the Metaphysical poet. This
sonnet express poet's view on the ultimate reality called - 'Death'.
people generally afraid of death but Donne has different point
of view about Death. Poet addresses to
death saying that there is no need for death to be proud though some
people call it very powerful and dangerous. Death believes that it overflows
the people when they die but in reality those people do not die at all.
Death has
no capacity to kill the poet or his ability. This is how Donne challenges
death. The image of death is nothing
but" Sleep and Rest" and so one should derive pleasure out of death.
The poet explains that the best of people have gone very soon with death and so
there is no need for any person to be afraid of death.
Death
means... rest to bones and soul is delivered to a new body. 'Death itself is
slave of fate, chance, kings and
distress in life. When these factors decide , death has to go to a person.
There are three places where death lives forever those places are poison, War, Sickness,
Death should not believe that only it can cause sleep to a person. Even Poppy
and Charm can cause sleep in a better way than death.
Death
cause sleep with one stroke where as poppy and charms cause sleep slowly and
sweetly. Donne concludes his sonnets saying that death didn't become proud. The
life is one a sleep in a sense that it is full of illusion but death liberates
us from that illusion and we wake up forever. Donne believes that if death is accepted with this spirit there
is no death at all. Death itself would
die. Finally ,Death is the reality of Life.
