Elegy: The Dream
John Donne
John
Donne's Elegy X with the title "The Dream" is about a lover
confession on his love for beloved and the difference between Dream and
Reality. The poem opens with a comparison between lovers' heart and a coin. The
poet has used image of coin for the expression of love. The way a coin is
impressed with the image of his beloved. The way image of a king sings to coin , her image gives honour and importance
to his heart. The lovers says that only those who are weak in their spirit
bother for honour. He doesn't care for honour because he believes that her
image has given honour to him.
The
lover going a head in his confessions mentions that when she goes away , his reasoning ends and there begins empires of fantasy. The
lover is of opinion that fantasy can't give him the joy of that height which
real presence can give. The reason is
the joy given by fantasy is convened and preoperational . Her real arrival has
the capacity of giving the joy of shocks also. If the lover dream's he would like to have
dream about her. The lover considers
sleep a great escape from pain because sleep locks the process of thinking when
the lover gets up after his sleep , he won't repent for the end of dream . He
would like to write sonnets on his beloved instead of passing time in wiping
for his beloved. He considers himself grown
with her love. He would like to be called mad in her love rather than an
idiot without love for anyone.
