Harry Potter

Harry Potter  is written by J. K. Rowling.  The story is about " Half Blood Prince- Harry Potter".Harry Potter series is the best seller book ever written . Novel or imagination fiction 'Harry Potter' can be read with various perspective. It depends on readers  how they want to observe the thing and estimate the ext. It seems like 'Harry Potter' is not written only for children or as 'Children Literature'. Readers can  read it as children literature but can't give the ultimate decision that it is only that.  The same way we may read this text as Speculative literature,  Feminist reading of the text, control of power and politics is there, Moral and Philosophical concern ,  Love and Death, Faith in Dead person, Life deals  Choice and Chance -  What is more important ? Crisis between racism or conflict of Purity of blood  etc.  So, many things are concerned with human emotions and gives the air of realism.

The plot of the novel is complex because  many things are going together. Psychological effects are there because of the plot which gives the glimpses of story within story. Here, I  want to discuss three points like..

1.' Harry Potter' as Speculative Literature

2. The Central Theme : Love and Death

3.Role of Choice and Chance in 'Harry Potter'.

(1) Harry Potter as Speculative Literature:

Harry potter stands for science fiction having the support of magic and its own world. Though it there in the text, we find many things which gives the air of realism in the novel. First we have to know what is speculative?  But to define  'Harry  Potter'  as speculative literature we must discuss about how it is not Speculative and then we discuss about Speculative literature.

Power and politics remains center throughout the whole series. Multiple layers of power remains there and The School - itself stands for institution. like we have many institution in Society for social control. Dumbledore - has the power of whole. Being the authority of the school, things are controlled by him. In early time we have the "Gurukul" for the education. In film "Mohabbatein" there  is the concept of 'Gurukul '  where everyone has to follow the rules and regulation otherwise they are punished.   Dumbledore stands  as tight character , Amitabh Bhchchan stands as tight character in movie as we find it reality.  The word  'Gurukul' itself stands for discipline and ideal education. This magic world also gives the same idea having the ideal institution for education.   Though it is just merely the idea, it is tried to project in the novel, too . We may study it with binary opposition also.

Some characters seem  like real Characters like.... Harry ,  Dumbledore, Hermione, etc... All characters face hurdle of human emotions and feelings like..... Love.  Because of  it relationship is suffered from the envy of each other.  Friendship is there,  Family Value is there ,and the most important thing Love is also existed in novel with power politics. We find racism and crisis of blood which also remains in society.
Voldemort has no physical structure until Diary is  not there. So, Character of Voldemort seems like Caricature   because he uses the other's body to come . With the presence of Diary , he is able to visible with physical structure. Though many things are existed in the text with the air of realism , so many things are  transidence  the  boundary of realism and from that point Speculative fiction beings.

What is Speculative Literature ?

Speculative literature is more fancy rather than imaginative.  Speculative writers deliberately break the law of probability and Possibility. J.K. Rowling creates totally new world  which is beyond the realm of ordinary human knowledge or imagination. It can't be happened in real life. It is obvious that if the world is new , their rules and regulations are different , their laws are different but it is seemed like natural. We enjoy that particular boundary in fiction and accept the   restriction without doubt, without asking question  in the text. In School children are used to doing magic but outside of the school they all are restricted. Magic, Gothic elements, some characters,  symbols, horror images  lead us to prove that 'Harry Potter'

Thus, many things go together in the text. Though it has some aspects of realism, it is not clear cut way of defining the text. We have more evidences which support  novel  'Harry Potter' as Speculative novel.

 (2) Central Theme : Love and Death :

Once one get life, Death is already decided . It is inevitable.  In ' Harry Potter' Love and Death is the central theme. It also seems like philosophical concern given by J. K. Rowling. Love becomes 'Armour' when it is scarified for other. When one does it out of Love he/she becomes immortal. in 'Harry Potter' Lily -Harry's  mother died for the sake of Harry's Life and creates the aura of love and strong feelings which provides him much strength and save his life from every critical situations. She is able to save his life after her death also. Means......Love is very important to live life. But with that one must be ready to accept the ultimate Truth of reality ........Death only.

Harry’s attitude toward death is usually shown as a balance between recklessness and respect. Death itself a gift. Because of death we reconstruct things after losing our memories. Sometime Memories become temptation.  We never know when one will die, but one day it must be done. Death is readily accepted by Potter that shows the spirit of life. Death or sacrifice is the best cleanser of evil. It was Voldemort's crippling fear of death which enticed him to make his Horcruxes. So, Harry have to die or have to suffer pain of death to kill evil which exists within himself. And Death becomes the  symbol of 'resurrection' in the novel.  After having the experience of death , he gets life as resurrection.

(3) Role of Choice and Chance in 'Harry Potter' :

It is said that  Human beings have choice in their life. Does it really ?
It is also said " Man is maker of his own fate." but in real sense we never know how human beings are driven by destiny. Though life has two aspects (1) Choice and (2) chance .

The author has described "choices" as a recurrent theme in the books.
"It's our choices," Dumbledore says, "that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities." It would be naive to claim that an individual's life is completely an act of voluntary choice. Harry didn't choose to be made an orphan; that, along with being shackled to the fragment of Voldemort's soul, was inflicted upon him. Means  mostly things depends on chance also  rather than choice.  He/she merely becomes puppet in front of situations and have to play role. people all are tricked by destiny or chance of situation and they that it is their choice. Harry potter gets chance of having second opportunity it is not his choice. So, Chance plays very vital role with magical realm  in the novel. Throughout the novel , Chance governs the things and it is accepted as he has the power of magic in magical world.

But life should not be depended on chance. It must have choice . As we have example of film "Ananad" the legendary film and role played by Rajesh Khanna .

It has also the same theme that life should be lived with choice however things are there but one must make choice for self. He knows that he has no much time then even he lives more happier than happy that is his own choice to live life. Even in the end, the author made it clear that Voldemort still had redemptive choice; but  "there was no possibility for hope..

Book review on ' Gandhi Ni Kawad ' by Harindra Dave.

Gandhi  Ni Kawad                             - Harindra Dave             One of the most famous Gujarati writer - Harindra Dave writes so many novels, Plays, essays and poetry also. " Gandhi Ni Kawad" is  written by Harindra Dave. "This novel is X- Ray image of our society."             Title of the novel is very symbolic. Through the reading readers can't understand the meaning of the title but at the end it is really very symbolically represented the core of the novel.             In this novel we find satire on politics and system. We can say that novel has the plot of politics. Though it has some furious senses, it remains pathetic till the end. The protagonist Karunashakar himself becomes the victim of the system who is against of this system. Karunashankar is used by politicians as manageable commodity.  and he becomes scapegoat of them. And , at the end he has no  way to escape from the situation in which he himself ca
